Responsible AI Principles

An organizational responsible-AI charter you can adopt and customize: 11 principles spanning human oversight, fairness, transparency, privacy, IP, accountability, vendor accountability, safety, and societal benefit, plus explicit authorized and unauthorized use cases. Grounded in the NIST AI RMF, OECD, and the EU AI Act.

Most companies can point to AI principles somewhere. Far fewer have a specific, written set their legal, security, and marketing teams all stand behind. This charter from MMA’s Responsible AI Innovation Lab (RAIL) is one you adopt as your own: fill in your organization’s name, tune the use-case lists to your risk tolerance, and ratify it through your governance body. Because it maps to the frameworks auditors already recognize, it holds up when a regulator, a customer, or your board asks what your AI principles actually are.

What’s inside

  • 11 principles, each written as a commitment you can act on: human oversight, fairness and inclusion, transparency, privacy and security, IP and fair compensation, accountability and governance, vendor accountability, safety and resilience, collaboration, societal benefit, and continuous improvement.
  • An authorized / prohibited use-case list with concrete lines drawn: no fully automated decisions with legal or significant personal impact without human review, no covert data collection, no deepfakes of real people without consent.
  • Framework alignment to the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, the OECD AI recommendation, and the EU AI Act, so the charter slots into compliance work you’re already doing.

How to use it

Adapt each principle to your risk profile before you circulate it: a fintech and a media company won’t draw the authorized-use line in the same place. Fill in your company name and AI Council contact where the template prompts for them, then ratify it through the body that actually owns AI decisions at your organization. This template covers days one and two of the five-day sequence in a responsible AI framework for marketing teams, alongside the usage policy.

Who it’s for

Any organization that builds or deploys AI and needs a values document that survives scrutiny. Adopt it on its own, or pair it with the Generative AI Usage Policy to turn the values into operational rules.
